SANGSAD BHABAN, April 28, 2019 (BSS) – Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal
today said the government has a plan to introduce pilot crop insurance project on
selective basis in some vulnerable areas including the haor region of the country
to compensate the farmers for damaging crops caused by natural disasters.

“We will take one or two crop insurance pilot project in some vulnerable areas
including the haor areas as a test case,” said the minister while responding to a
supplementary query made by treasury bench lawmaker Direndra Devnath
Shambu in the House here.

The initiative of crop insurance has both merit and demerit and it would be
launched as a test case in the haor areas, said the minister, adding that “If it is
proved successful than it would be taken throughout the country.”

Referring to the highest rice production growth of the country, the finance
minister said “We are witnessing highest rice production growth this year and if
we launch the crop insurance programme normally in the country than the
farmers will be reluctant in farming due to receiving the insurance money.”
