Sher-e-Bangla’s 57th death anniversary observed

DHAKA, April 27, 2019 (BSS) – The 57th death anniversary of Sher-e-Bangla Abul Kashem Fazlul Huq was observed today in a befitting manner.

Abul Kashem Fazlul Huq, popularly known as Sher-e-Bangla or Huq Saheb, was born on October 26, 1873, at his maternal uncle’s house at Saturia, a prosperous village in the southern part of the district of Bakerganj. But his ancestral house was at Chakhar, a village 14 miles away from Barisal town.

Huq was an eminent public leader who had held many high political posts including the Mayor of Calcutta (1935), Chief Minister of undivided Bengal (1937-1943) and East Bengal (1954), Home Minister of Pakistan (1955) and Governor of East Pakistan (1956-58).

Bangladesh Awami League (AL) and its associate organizations paid tribute to Sher-e-Bangla by placing wreaths at his grave at 7.30 am at Tin Netar Mazar near Dhaka University’s Doel Chattar area. Fatiha and special doa were also offered.

Presidium member of AL and agriculture minister Dr Abdur Razzak, AL’s acting general secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif, MP, and organizing secretary Abu Sayeed Al Mahmud Swapon, MP, were present at the programme.

Speaking on the occasion, Mahbubul Alam Hanif said Jamaat Islami has no right to do politics in this country even they do so by changing party name.

North and south city units of AL, Awami Sechchhasebak League, Chhatra League and Krishak League paid tribute to Sher-e-Bangla.

Other political parties, including National Awami Party (NAP) and National Democratic Party (NDP) and socio-cultural and professional bodies, including Bangladesh Jatiya Manobadhikar Samity and Sher-e-Bangla AK Fazlul Huq Gobeshona Parishad paid tributes to Sher-e-Bangla by organizing various programmes.

Leaders and activists of these organizations held discussions, placed wreaths and offered doa and munajat at Sher-e-Bangla’s mazar in the city.

Sher-e-Bangla Jatiya Smrity Parishad held a discussion with its president poet Abdul Khaleque in the chair. Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haq attended the programme as chief guest while Barrister Amirul Islam and grandson of Sher-e-Bangla AK Faizul Huq took part in the discussion.
