DHAKA, April 23, 2019 (BSS) – The Appellate Division of the Supreme
Court today upheld stay order issued by its chamber judge on a High Court
order granting bail to former Tangail-3 lawmaker Amanur Rahman Khan Rana in a
case lodged over killing of two Jubo League leaders.
A four-member Appellate Division bench headed by Chief Justice Syed
Mahmud Hossain passed the order, disposing of a state plea against that High
Court order.
Attorney General Mahbubey Alam moved the state plea before the apex
court, while senior lawyer Abdul Baset Mazumder, Mansurul Haque Chowdhury and
Sayeed Ahmed Raza stood for Rana.
“High Court had granted bail to Rana, which was later stayed by the
Appellate Division Chamber Judge Court. Today the Appellate Division full
bench upheld that stay,” Raza told newsmen.
The High Court on March 6 had allowed Rana bail for six months in the
case.
Following an appeal filed by the state, Justice Md. Nuruzzaman of
Appellate Division Chamber Judge Court on March 14, had stayed that High
Court order.
Jubo League leaders Shamim and Mamun went missing on July 16, 2012,
after coming to Tangail town. Mamun’s father on July 9, 2013, filed a murder
case with Tangail court over the incident.
Three persons Khandaker Zahid, Shahadat Hossain and Hiron Miah, who were
arrested by law enforcers on different occasion in connection of the case,
confessed their involvement in that incident. Later Rana too were shown
arrested in the case following the confession made by those three.
