Mujibnagar Day observed across country

DHAKA, April 17, 2019 (BSS) – The Mujibnagar Day was observed today through different programmes across the country recalling significant memories of the first government of Bangladesh.

People from all walks of life joined different programmes at upazila, district and divisional levels as the provisional “Mujibnagar Government” constituted at Baidyanathtala in Meherpur district on this day, 1971.

Baidyanathtala was later renamed as Mujibnagar and so Bangladesh Government in exile was known as the Mujibnagar Government.

The tiny mango grove-covered village witnessed the ceremonial formation of the provisional government of Bangladesh and millions of freedom loving people listened to the announcement of the formation of the government over radio.

The provisional government in exile named “Mujibnagar Government” was constituted with Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman as the President, Syed Nazul Islam as acting president, Tajuddin Ahmed as the Prime Minister.

This core cabinet steered the liberation war to the victory on December 16 that year.

Valiant freedom fighter and former Commander of Meherpur district Mukijoddha Sangsad Bashir Ahmed, Liberation War Affairs Secretary of Meherpur District Awami League Ataul Hakim Lal Mia and author of ‘Meherpurer Itihas O Oytijya’ Tozammel Azam told BSS about the initial preparation of the formation of Mujibnagar Government.

In Meherpur, the historic Mujibnagar Day was observed in the district coinciding with national programmes. Marking the day, deputy commissioner of Meherpur and superintendent of police hoisted the national flag atop the memorial monument at Mujibnagar in the morning.

In Rajshahi, historic Mujibnagar Day was observed here in a befitting manner.

Different political parties including Bangladesh Awami League, district administration and various educational institutions including Rajshahi University (RU) arranged various programmes including rally and discussion meeting highlighting significance of the day.

Local unit of Bangladesh Awami League and associate organizations observed the day in a befitting manner.

The party leaders and workers led by Mayor of Rajshahi City Corporation AHM Khairuzzaman Liton garlanded the portraits of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and four national leaders at in front of the party office.

In Rangpur, historic Mujibnagar Day was observed in a befitting manner.

On the occasion, the main discussion organised by district administration on ‘Historic Mujibnagar Day and Independence of Bangladesh’ was held at the Town Hall here.

The district and city units of Awami League (AL) and its associate bodies chalked out programmes – hoisting of national flag, placing of wreaths at the portraits of Bangabandhu and four national leaders—to mark the day.
