Mujibnagar government a great leap to achieving independence: Prof Harun

RAJSHAHI, April 17, 2019 (BSS) – Vice-chancellor of the National University (NU) Prof

Harun-or-Rashid has said Mujibnagar government was a great leap towards achieving the

independence of Bangladesh.

“Mujibnagar government got a legal stand for demanding all sorts of support and

assistance of the world community to carry on armed struggle against the Pakistani

junta who denied our right to self-determination by refusing handing over power to the

elected representatives of the people,” he said.

Prof Rashid was addressing a discussion on the Mujibnagar Day organized by Rajshahi

University (RU) authority at its Senate Building today.

Mujibnagar Day is observed on April 17 every year marking constituent of the first

government of independent Bangladesh on this day in 1971 at Baidyanathtala mango grove

in Meherpur of the then Kushtia district later renamed as Mujibnagar.

RU Vice-chancellor Prof Abdus Sobhan, Pro-vice-chancellors Prof Ananda Kumar Saha and

Prof Chowdhury Muhammad Jakaria also spoke on the occasion with Prof Mujibur Rahman,

Convener of RU Progressive Teachers Society in the chair.

Formation of the government with Syed Nazrul Islam as acting president in the absence

of Bangabandhu along with Tajuddin Ahmed as Prime Minister was a legal platform to

fight for independence.

NU VC recalled the events of the day when the exiled leaders took the most momentous

decision of forming a legal government to draw global attention to to wage the War of

Liberation.
