Maternal, infant mortality reduced notably: Momen

DHAKA, APRIL 17, 2019 (BSS) – Foreign Affairs Minister Dr. AK Abdul Momen today said that the maternal and infant mortality rates have reduced to a mentionable level following the establishment of a number of community clinics across the country.

“Bangladesh has become the role model in reducing infant and maternal death rates among the developing countries …The community clinics are playing an important role here” , an official press release quoted the Foreign Affairs Minister saying that while addressing as the chief guest the 41st conference of the ‘Polli Shishu Foundation Of Bangladesh’.

Abdul Momen also said that, “In 1996, Sheikh Hasina led AL government set up 13,000 community clinics, which was a remarkable initiative. But they were closed down by the BNP-Jamaat-e-Islami coalition government in 2001”.

He added that currently, 14 thousand community clinics across the country are playing an important role in reducing mortality rates among infants and their mothers.

Presided over by the Chairman of Polli Shishu Foundation of Bangladesh, Mosharrof Hossain Khan, Professor Dr. M A Aziz, MP and Advisor (Programmes) of ATN Bangla Television, Nawazish Ali Khan also spoke, among others, at the conference.
