RANGPUR, April 17, 2019 (BSS) – Formation of the provisional government of Bangladesh in exile at Baiddonathtola in Meherpur on April 17, 1971, immediately drew global attention accelerating the War of Liberation towards the victory.
The observation came today at the main discussion organised by district administration on ‘Historic Mujibnagar Day and Independence of Bangladesh’ at the Town Hall here to celebrate the historic Mujibnagar Day- 2019.
Marking the day the district and city units of Awami League (AL) and its associate bodies chalked out programmes which include – hoisting of national flag, placing wreaths at the portraits of Bangabandhu and four national leaders.
Divisional Commissioner Muhammad Joynul Bari addressed the main discussion as the chief guest with Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Syed Enamul Kabir in the chair.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) for Rangpur Range Police Devdas Bhattacharya, Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Abdul Alim Mahmud, Zila Parishad Chairman Advocate Chhafia Khanom, Acting President of district AL Mamtaz Uddin Ahmed and Additional Police Super Maruf Hassan addressed as special guests.
Recalling the importance of the historic day, the speakers said the War of Liberation got a defined width in the international arena on this day in 1971 with taking of oath by the provisional government in exile at Baiddonathtola.
“The national flag was hoisted on that day there after renaming Baiddonathtola as Mujibnagar as a mark of tribute to Bangabandhu who was declared as the President of the government- in-exile,” said Police Commissioner Abdul Alim Mahmud.
Mamtaz Uddin Ahmed said thousands of heroic freedom fighters, AL leaders, local and foreign journalists along with independence-seeker Bangalees were present on the occasion to witness the historic moment.
“Syed Nazrul Islam took oath as the acting President in the absence of Bangabandhu, Tazuddin Ahmad as the first Prime Minister, while Khandaker Mostaq Ahmed, Captain M Mansur Ali and AHM Quamaruzzaman as the cabinet ministers,” Mamtaz added.
The chief guest stressed on informing the true history to young generations to inspire them with patriotic zeal in building a ‘Sonar Bangla’ as dreamt by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
“We must work now with utmost sincerity to properly implement massive development works undertaken by the present government to build a middle-income nation by 2021 and a developed country by 2041 to realise the dream of Bangabandhu,” he added.
Later, a colourful cultural function with participation of artists of District Shilpokola Academy and Shishu Academy and other cultural organisations was arranged at the same venue.
