Dr Hasan criticizes BNP for not observing Mujibnagar Day

DHAKA, April 17, 2019 (BSS) – Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud today said those who do not observe the historic Mujibnagar Day actually do not believe in independence and sovereignty of the country.

“BNP doesn’t observe the Mujibnagar Day. But its founder Ziaur Rahman took part in the Liberation War as an employee of Mujibnagar government,” he told the newsmen after paying homage to Bangabandhu by placing wreath at his portrait in front of Bangabandhu Memorial Museum at Dhanmondi in the city.

Dr Hasan, also the publicity and publication secretary of the ruling Awami League, said the country’s first government had taken oath on April 17, 1971.

He said Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was declared the first president of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, while Syed Nazrul Islam was appointed the acting president in the absence of Bangabandhu.

The minister said Tajuddin Ahmed was appointed as the first prime minister, while Khondoker Moshtaque Ahmed, Capt M Mansur Ali and AHM Qamaruzzaman were named as cabinet members.

Dr Hasan said the then government appointed BNP’s founder Ziaur Rahman as sector commander in the Liberation War. “But BNP doesn’t observe the Mujibnagar Day. So, how much they believe in the independence and sovereignty of the country?” he added.

About the possibility of joining parliament by BNP’s elected MPs, Dr Hasan said the country’s people will welcome their decision if they join the House. “We will also welcome their decision,” he added.

If they join, it will be a positive decision, he said, adding, “I think they could play a vital role in parliament and democracy would be stronger.”
