Old horses outshine current stars after DPL group phase

DHAKA, April 13, 2019 (BSS)- While the national stars, players considered as future prospect looked off colour due to injury and other problems, old players shone in the first phase of Dhaka Premier League (DPL) to show their value in the domestic cricket.

In the chart of top 10 in batting or bowling, no current stars could make their presence felt, a thing that was mainly down to the reason of their lesser number of match or their injury and niggles. But there was no denying fact that they couldn’t show a performance worthy, something which even made team management worried as they are on their way to form the World Cup squad.

Only Mosaddek Hossain Saikat, the captain of Abahani Limited and Anamul Haque Bijoy of Prime Bank Cricket Club who played in the national team in the near past could make it top 10 in batting.

Mosaddek is in the ninth place while Anamul is third in the list led by Mohammedan Sporting Club captain Roqibul Hasan (545 runs) who after long time shone in the domestic cricket.

Abahani’s opener Jahurul Islam Omee (531) is the other player to shine, staying in the second spot. But the good thing is Saif Hasan’s presence in the list. With 506 runs from 11 games, Saif, the player of Prime Doleshwar considered as the bright prospect of Bangladesh cricket made it to the fourth place.

Roqibul, Jahurul, Anamul, Saif are the only four batsmen to score runs over 500 in the league so far. Raqibul Hasan’s only century — a 104-ball 102 — in this edition is one of the best in the leagues. Anamul scored three straight centuries to keep selectors interested about him.

Yasir Ali is the other one who impressed. While there is lot of talk revolving around his surprise inclusion into the World Cup squad, Yasir, a player of Brothers Union made the top 10 with 423 runs but he holds the highest average-a staggering 105.75.

He hit one century and two half-centuries but unfortunately his side couldn’t value his performance as they are one of the three teams to play relegation league.

The list contains also the likes of Indian recruit Abhimanyu Easwaran, only foreigner to make the top 10, Fazle Rabbi and Mizanur Rahman.

The bowling chart is led by seasoned campaigner Farhad Reza, the Prime Doleshwar captain who seemed to be more potent as his age increases. He took 27 wickets to lead the top 10 bowling list. Khelghar Samaj Kallayan Samity’s young pacer Robiul haque with 22 wickets is in the second spot but his 5-41 against Gazi Group Cricketers in a losing-cause was the highlight of his sheering talent.

Kamrul Islam Rabbi, the medium pacer and left-arm spinner Arafat Sunny are the two players who played in the national team in the recent past made it top 10 with 17 and 16 wickets, being placed to fifth and seventh spot.

Hasan Murad and Delwar Hossain, other two young players also caught attention. Although Delwar Hossain of Shinepukur Cricket Club has scalped 19 wickets in 10 matches — one less than his third-placed Hasan Murad of BKSP — but the right-hander played one game fewer and also has been impactful with the bat.

His best figure of five for 46 was followed by a crucial 34 in a two-wicket victory against Mohammedan. His two unbeaten 40s against Gazi Group and Doleshwar however could not help his for winning causes.
