SC upholds HC order to compensate Abrar’s family

DHAKA, April 09, 2019 (BSS) – The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court
(SC) today upheld a High Court order that directed the owner of Suprobhat
Paribahan to give Taka 10 lakh to the family of Abrar Ahmed Chowdhury, who
was crushed by one of his buses.

A four-member apex court bench headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain
passed the order, scrapping an appeal filed by the Suprobhat Paribahan owner
against the March 20 High Court order.

A High Court division bench comprising Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder
and Justice KM Hafizul Alam had passed the order after holding hearing on a
writ filed in this regard.

The court also had issued a rule, asking authorities concerned including
home secretary, transport secretary and inspector general of police to
explain within four weeks as to why it shall not pass order to give Taka five
crore to Abrar’s family in compensation.

“The court also asked Bangladesh Road Transport Authority, additional
inspector general of Dhaka Metropolitan Police and Accident Research
Institute of BUET to probe the accident and submit report within the next 15
days,” Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kazal, who moved the writ before court, told
newsmen at that time.

The killer bus ran over Abrar in the morning of March 19 as he was trying
to cross the road, leaving him dead on the spot.
