Russia plans to build three universal nuclear-powered icebreakers by 2022

MOSCOW, April 6, 2019 (BSS/TASS) – Three universal nuclear-powered
icebreakers with a capacity of 60 MW, which will be needed to develop the
Arctic shelf of the Northern Sea Route, are planned to be completed by 2022,
Russia’s Minister of Industry and Trade Denis Manturov said on Friday.

“We are creating a powerful icebreaking fleet for the development of the
Arctic shelf and the Northern Sea Route. By 2022, we plan to complete work on
three universal nuclear-powered icebreakers with a capacity of 60 MW,” the
Minister said.

According to him, Mi-171A2 helicopters, as well as Mi-8AMT and Mi-8MTV-1
helicopters can also be used for work on the shelf.
