Mexican tourist hotspots hit by blackout

MEXICO CITY, April 6, 2019 (BSS/AFP) – A blackout struck Mexico’s
southeastern Yucatan Peninsula Friday, including the popular tourist spots of
Cancun, Cozumel and Isla Mujeres, the government said.

The director of the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE), Manuel Bartlett,
blamed the outage on a damaged transmission line caused by a fire at a sugar
cane plantation. A similar blackout happened last month.

Friday’s outage affected a million customers, with local media reporting it
also impacted cellphone networks.

Meanwhile, the public safety secretary for Yucatan state announced that
personnel had been deployed to direct traffic due to a lack of traffic
lights.
