World Autism Awareness Day observed

DHAKA, April 2, 2019 (BSS) – The 12th World Autism Awareness Day was observed in the country as elsewhere in the globe today with a renewed pledge to bring the people suffering from Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and other Neuro developmental Disabilities (NDDs) into the mainstream of development.

The Ministry of Social Welfare, Social Welfare Department, National Disability Development Foundation, National Disability Forum and different socio cultural bodies and non-government organizations (NGOs) took various programmes marking the day.

The theme of the Day this year was “Assistive Technologies, Active Participation”.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina joined the inaugural function of the 12th World Autism Awareness Day at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) here this morning, where she announced that the government would arrange allowances for all the differently able people from the next budget.

The premier also witnessed a cultural show preformed by autistics there.

The United Nations General Assembly unanimously declared April 2 as the World Autism Awareness Day to highlight the needs for helping improve the lives of children and adults who suffer from the disorder.

On the day, the government offices and major installations of the country has been illuminated with blue colored light for three days from today while the Department of Social Services and Bangladesh Protibondhi Foundation (BPF) illuminated with the light for 15 days.

Bangladesh Television (BTV), Bangladesh Betar and private TV channels and radio stations are airing special programmes on the occasion. The newspapers in the meantime published special supplements highlighting the significance of the Day.

Road islands were also decorated with banners, festoons and placards on the occasion.
