Huge losses caused due to fault in FR Tower construction: police

DHAKA, March 31, 2019 (BSS)- The huge loss and damages were caused in the
Banani FR Tower fire due to fault the construction work of the building and
lack of emergency exit and fire extinguishers.

“A huge loss and damages were counted in the Banani FR Tower fire due to
fault in the building construction and lack of emergency exit, adequate smoke
detectors and fire extinguishers,” additional police commissioner of
Detectives Branch (DB) Md Abdul Baten told a press briefing at DMP’s media
centre here today.

He said police have already arrested Tasveer Ul Islam, owner of the
illegally constructed portion of FR (Faruk Rupayan) Tower, and SMHI Faruk
Hossain in a case filed over the fire incident.

“They were arrested on Saturday night by conducting drives in the city’s
Gulshan and Bashundhara and Baridhara areas,” Baten said.

Expressing deep condolence over the loss of lives in the city devastating
inferno, he said the fire was broke out in FR Tower due to negligence of
Faruk, Tasveer and Liakat Ali Khan Mukul causing a huge loss to asset and
leaving 26 people dead.

The DB official said they considered the FR Tower as the only means of
making money as the owners ignored the safety and service issues that caused
the huge loss and damages.

Among the accused, he said, Faruq is the owner of land and 45 percent of
infrastructure while Tasveer is the owner of illegally-built portion of the
building and president of the building’s safety committee.

Baten said Rupayan Group owner Liakat constructed the FR Tower violating
the rules and regulations and sold the building for his personal gains.

“Drives continue to detain Liakat,” he added.

A total of 26 people were killed and 70 others injured in the deadly fire
incident on Thursday.
