Spinners should contain runs to assist pacer in WC: Mehidy
DHAKA, March 31, 2019 (BSS)- Bangladesh off-spinner Mehidy Hasan insisted the spinners should assist the pacers in effective way in the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup, predicting that the England’s wicket will not be so conducive for the turners.
‘Our (spinners) duty is to support the pacers, co-operate them because the tournament will be played in England where the pacers would play main role. If the tournament is being played in the sub-continent, the spinners will be in the forefront,” Meidhy said here today.
He clarified the term to assist pacer in ‘effective way’ as conceding as little runs as the spinners of Bangladesh can to do.
“I think it is important for the spinners to contain the runs because the wicket there in England historically doesn’t tend to favour the spinners much,” he added.
“Our target should be to as economical as we can be if we can’t get any wicket. If we don’t concede more than five runs per over, it will be very good bowling figure. And if we can take one or two wickets that will be fantastic.”
“So the main target for the spinners in the World Cup will be to assist the pacers by conceding as little runs as we can to do.”
Mehidy played one match in Champions trophy which England hosted in 2017. In that match against Australia he made 14 runs and conceded four runs in one over before rain finally forced a cancellation of the match and gave Bangladesh a one valuable point.
From his experience, Mehidy said, it is imperative to land the bowl in right areas if the spinners want to thrive there.
“I was with the team during the Champions trophy albeit I played just one match. I had the opportunity to see the wicket closely and what I watched the English wicket is very good to bat on,” he revealed.
“But if we can bowl in right channel, we can force the batsmen to do the mistakes. There’s little possibility there we can spin the ball much there, the ball will come on bat nicely. So we have to bowl according to the plan. The main thing is to execute the plan well. If so we can thrive there really.”
