City waterways will get back its lost beauty in 10 years: Khalid

DHAKA, March 30, 2019 (BSS) – State minister for shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury today hoped that the waterways around the capital will get back its lost
beauty within next 10 years due to government’s vibrant initiatives as he inaugurated the ‘Maritime Safety Week-2019″ here.

“The government has been working relentlessly for restoration of waterways
with taking measures to free the riverbanks from encroachment and prevent
river pollution to make the waterways more accessible to people,” he said at
the inaugural function of the week in Sundarban – 11 Launch at Sadarghat
terminal.

The government has done a lot in dredging rivers in last 10 years, he
said, adding that “New dredgers have been brought and the process of
collecting more dredgers is on to bring back the lost beauty of the rivers”.

Chairman of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Shipping Ministry Major
(Retd) Rafiqul Islam and Shipping Secretary Mohammad Abdus Samad were present
at the function.

After the inaugural function, a naval rally led by the state minister was
brought out from the Sadarghat launch terminal.

The ‘Maritime Safety Week-2019’ will end on April 5 next.
