Follow ‘building code’ properly: PM

DHAKA, March 29, 2019 (BSS) – Against the backdrop of a number of fire incidents in the country in recent time, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today asked all concerned to follow “building code” properly in constructing buildings and other establishments.

“The building owners and users will have to take appropriate measures about overall safety to check accidents, including fire,” she said while chairing a meeting of the Awami League (AL) Presidium held at Ganabhaban, the official residence of the prime minister, here this afternoon.

In this connection, Sheikh Hasina, also the AL president, instructed the government agencies to enhance their strict vigilances about overall safety of the life and property.

“Special importance will also have to be given to raise mass awareness to this end,” she added.

The prime minister thanked all concerned including the Fire Service and Civil Defence, armed forces, law enforcement agencies and students of different educational institutions for playing a courageous and effective role after the inferno at FR Tower in Banani in the capital yesterday.

At the outset of the meeting, the prime minister expressed deep shock and sorrow at the deaths in the Banani FR Tower fire.

She also prayed for eternal peace of the departed souls and conveyed profound sympathy to the bereaved families.

Sheikh Hasina strongly denounced the terrorist attack on two Christchurch mosques in New Zealand.

She also conveyed her deep sympathy to New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern in this regard.

The meeting decided to form eight teams for celebrating birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and strengthening organisational activities ahead of the upcoming council of the party.

These teams comprising members of the advisory council and presidium as well as the leaders of central working committee of the party will monitor activities of the eight organisational divisions and the grassroots councils and make the activities dynamic.

It also took a decision to draw up elaborate programmes to celebrate the birth centenary of the Father of the Nation from the party. For this the party will observe programmes throughout the year and publish books in this regard.

From the meeting directives have been given to the concerned to prepare a report and take actions against the ministers, MPs and party leaders who are not working for the party-nominated candidates in different local government elections.

AL Presidium members Begum Matia Chowdhury, Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, Mohammad Nasim, Kazi Zafarullah, Advicate Sahara Khatun, Pijush Kanti Bhattacharya, Nurul Islam Nahid, Dr Abdur Razzaque, Col (retd) Faruk Khan, Ramesh Chandra Sen and Advocate Abdul Mannan Khan, office secretary Dr Abdus Sobhan Golap and deputy office secretary Barrister Biplab Barua were present at the meeting.
