Bangabandhu Inter-University Sports champs kicks off
DHAKA, March 29, 2019 (BSS)- The “Bangabandhu Inter-University Sports
Champs 2019” with participation of more than 3,500 students from 70 public
and private universities across the country begun today (Friday) as a part of
birth anniversary celebration of Father of the Nation.
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal inaugurated the championship at
Amphitheater in Hatirjheel in the capital.
State Minister for Youth and Sports Zahid Ahsan Russell presided over the
opening ceremony while Acting Secretary of Youth and Sports Ministry Dr M
Jafaruddin was present.
Asaduzzaman said students of School and Colleges are misguided because
they are not getting enough scope to participate in sports and leaning
towards the drugs. There is no substitute of sports to keep away this
generation from drugs. Youth is ushering to build a future Bangladesh.
He also urged the concern authority to arrange this competition in regular
basis in each year.
Zahid Ahsan Russell said this is the first time such kind of tournament
has been arranged with the participation of students of public and private
universities. It’s also the biggest event of university-based competition of
the country.
The state minister said construction of mini stadium already has began in
each upazila and the construction work of sports complex will begin next year
in each district. Youth complex and research center will also be set up for
the welfare of youth.
Prior the inaugural ceremony, marathon and cycling events participating by
hundreds of different universities students were held.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to handover the
champion trophy to the winner at a colorful closing ceremony on April 17 at
Bangabandhu National Stadium in the capital.
With direction of the Youth and Sports Ministry, technical assistance and
supervision of 10 sports federations and private patronage of Polar,
Spellbound Leo Burnett, the only “YOUNG BUT EXPERIENCED” communication agency
of Bangladesh, has taken all preparations to conduct the championship as the
event partner.
The top three winners of every event will be awarded gold, silver and
bronze medals respectively and the highest gold medal awarded male and female
participants will be awarded a “Best University Athlete- Male” and “Best
University Athlete- Female” trophies respectively.
Besides, the highest Gold medal winning university will be awarded the
“Bangabandhu Inter-University Sports Champs-2019” trophy. The winner
university will be able to keep the trophy for a year.
On the occasion of the birth anniversary of Father of the Nation
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, this initiative has been taken to build
the nation inspired by the ideals and cognitions of him and to keep the vigor
and fervor of the youth elevated.
The main goals and purposes of the event are to abstain the students from
antisocial activities like drug addiction and militancy and to comprise
themselves as a sensible and effective patriotic citizen inspired by the
ideals of Bangabandhu by practicing sports.
The mega sports event is being organised under 10 disciplines– Football,
Cricket, Swimming, Athletics, Table Tennis, Basketball, Volleyball, Handball,
Cycling and Badminton– at different university campuses across the country
with the theme of “Let’s build a Bangladesh in cognition of Bangabandhu”
inspired by the ideals of the greatest Bengali of all time.
