Public investment important for economic dev: Speaker

DHAKA, March 27, 2019 (BSS) – Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Speaker Dr Shirin
Sharmin Chaudhury today said role of public investments is important for
economic development and building inclusive society.

“Public investment can play a vital role in ensuring public services,
including infrastructural development and coping with adverse effect of
climate change, in the South Asian countries,” she said while addressing a
session of a two-day workshop in New Delhi, a press release said here.

The IMF – South Asia Regional Training and Technical Assistance Centre
(IMF-SARTTAC) organised the session titled ‘Reaping the Dividends of Public
Investment: Perspective of Bangladesh’.

Emphasizing on increasing public investment for sustainable and stable
economic development, Shirin Sharmin said, “The public investment can be
increased in different sectors, including health, education and
telecommunication … and it must be for ensuring welfare of the people”.

Underpinning the need for proper management of the public investment, the
speaker urged the people concerned to follow IMF Model to make the investment
safe. Referring to different development activities took place in Bangladesh
under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, she said the country
will be transformed into a middle income one by 2021 and developing by 2024
under her (PM’s) leadership.

By 2041, the country will be transformed into a developed and prosperous
‘Sonar Bangla’ dreamt by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur
Rahman.

Conducted by SARTTAC Director Sukhwinder Singh, IMF Resident Representative
to Bangladesh Ragnar Gudmundsson presented a keynote in the session.

Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Estimates Md Abdus Shahid,
Chairman of the Standing Committee on Public Accounts Md Rustum Ali Farazi,
Sagufta Yasmin, MP, Anwarul Abedin Khan, MP, and Ahasanul Islam (Titu), MP,
took part in the session.
