Two Hizb-ut Tahrir men jailed by anti-terrorism tribunal

DHAKA, March 24, 2019 (BSS) – An anti-terrorism tribunal here today
sentenced two members of banned militant outfit Hizb-ut Tahrir to two-year
imprisonment in a case lodged under the anti-terrorism act.

Judge Mujibur Rahman of the tribunal passed the order, sentencing Saidur
Rahman and Touhidul Alam to two-year imprisonment in absentia. The court also
fined them Taka five thousand each, to suffer three months imprisonment in
default.

The court, however, acquitted chief coordinator of the group Prof Mohiuddin
Ahmed and three others from the charges. The other three are Qazi Morshedul
Haque Plabon, Tanvir Ahammed and Abu Eusuf Ali.

According to the case documents, some Hizb-ut Tahrir members on April 18,
2010, were distributing anti-government leaflets and posters beside Taqwa
Mosque in Uttara Sector-3 and were carrying petrol bombs to create panic
among people.

Uttara Police Station team raided the area and arrested the accused. Police
later filed the case under the anti-terrorism act. Inspector Nurul Amin of
Detective Branch (DB) on February 9, 2013, filed chargesheet against six
including Mohiuddin. The court on September 27, 2016, framed charges in the
case.
