Mohammedan keen to change the history

DHAKA, March 24, 2019 (BSS)- While the rivalry between Mohammedan Sporting
Club and Abahani Limited almost split the country in the past, the aura is
now nowhere near that.

There are many reasons for the current situation, among which one of the
main reasons is that the Mohammedan’s lackluster performance against Abahani.

The Motijheel outfit has never any cricket game against Abahani in the last
five years, making them a no match against the archrivals.

This time Mohammedan formed a balanced team unlike the past five years,
which was appreciated by the cricket pundits. But still they lost two
consecutive matches to remain in the fifth position of the Dhaka Premier
League (DPL) point table so far.

However, time is not running out still and Mohammedan is keen to turn the
things around by beating Abahani Limited in tomorrow’s game at the Sher-e-
Bangla National Cricket Stadium.

According to Mohammedan coach Monjurul Islam, the match will set a tone for
the whole tournament. Monju, a studious left arm seamer in his time with
Bangladesh Cricket also was the part of Mohammedan’s regular humbling against
Abahani as a player.

As he is appointed a coach for the first in his beloved club, Monju is keen
to change the history.

“I turned to be a professional coach from a professional player. I played
for Mohammedan for the last 14 years before turning to coach for the first
time. What happened in the past is past,” Monju said here today.

“As a coach I want to look forward, not look back. I believe the 2019 is
going to be a big year for Mohammedan. We are keen to change the history. We
have the ingredients to change the history against Abahani.”

Mohammedan also didn’t clinch any trophy since 2010, an awful record that
didn’t go well for a traditional powerhouse like them.

“I am aware of that (the lack of trophy),” Monju said. “We have won three
matches in this league and lost two consecutive matches. Honestly we couldn’t
play up to the mark in all those matches. But the team has a rich tradition.
I think if we can win tomorrow’s match against Abahani, there will be massive
change in team’s attitude.”

“We need to win the crucial moments and play good cricket to create better
option. Hopefully the team will rise to the occasion,” Monju concluded.
