RAJSHAHI, March 22, 2019 (BSS)- Academics and experts concerned here
unequivocally called for more in-depth research on environment to protect it
from further degradation in the region including its vast Barind tract.

Adverse impact of climate change has been posing a serious threat to the
region’s environment and overall living and livelihood condition of people.
So, the experts opined in-depth research has become an urgent need to explore
the ways and means to cope with the adverse situation.

They came up with the observation while addressing the opening ceremony of
a daylong First Reunion- 2019 of Rajshahi University (RU) Geography and
Environmental Studies Alumni Association at RU campus here today.

To mark the celebration, the alumni members took out a large rally on the
university campus with the ‘Green Earth, Green Life’ theme.

RU Vice-chancellor Prof Abdus Sobhan and its Pro-VC Prof Ananda Kumar
Shaha addressed the session as the chief and special guests respectively with
Prof Rezaur Rahman, Chairman of Department of Geography and Environmental
Sciences and Convener of Alumni Convening Committee, in the chair.

Dean of Life and Earth Science Faculty Prof Nazrul Islam and Member
Secretary of the Alumni Convening Committee Prof Masud Parvej Rana also
spoke.

Prof Sobhan urged the environmental scientists and researchers to evolve
need-based technologies of promoting less-water consuming crops in Barind
areas to lessen the gradually mounting pressure on groundwater. Substantial
and sustainable promotion of less-water consuming crops could be the
effective means of achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through
mitigating water-stressed condition in the drought-prone Barind region.

He also mentioned that large-scale reduction of plastic pollution can be
the vital means of protecting water bodies and environment as well from
further degradation.

Prof Sobhan expressed concern over an increasing use of plastics for
packaging perishable foods and called for creating public awareness to
prevent environmental degradation that severely threatens existence of the
whole planet, its habitation and civilization.
