Boro cultivation exceeds target in Netrakona

NETRAKONA, Mar 21, 2019 (BSS) – Boro rice cultivation in the district has exceeded this year’s target with bringing additional 2,648 hectors of land under cultivation.

Now, farmers are putting in their best efforts in nursing the growing rice plants across the district.

Officials of the department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Netrakona said, the DAE has taken a target for producing 7.50 lakhs tonnes of clean Boro rice from 1,81,952 hectors of land in ten upazilas of the district.

But, the farmers have planted seedlings on 1,84, 600 hectors of land against this year’s target of 1,81,952 hectors.

Crops specialist of the DAE Netrakona Salma Aktar told BSS that the agriculture experts and farmers are happy seeing excellent growth of the plants and favorable weather condition.

Extension department is expecting a bumper production of the Boro rice this year if the climate condition remains favorable till the harvesting period.

Talking to this BSS correspondent, the deputy director of the DAE Netrakona Habibur Rahman said different state-run agencies including BADC and BCIC have supplied improved quality seeds and fertilizers along with agricultural equipments and irrigation machineries to the farmers.

At the directives of the government, state-run commercial banks including Bangladesh Krishi bank provided credit facilities to the farmers to make cultivation program successful, he said.

The field workers and agricultural experts of the DAE Netrakona are giving field-level service to let the farmers know about the methods of producing bumper Boro rice by reducing production costs.

Power Development Board (PDB) and Rural development Board (REB) Netrakona have ensured supply of uninterrupted electricity to the Boro fields for keeping the irrigation machineries operative round the clock, Habibur Rahman added .
