Speaker urges IMF to help strengthen parliamentary committees

DHAKA, Mar 21, 2019 (BSS) – Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin
Chaudhury today urged International Monetary Fund (IMF) to provide support
for strengthening the activities of parliamentary committees by arranging
training for the officials concerned.

The Speaker came up with the call when IMF Resident Representative in Dhaka
Ragnar Gudmundsson met her at the parliament office in the capital, an
official release said.

During the meeting, they discussed the upcoming ‘Microeconomic Policy and
Capacity Building Seminar for Legislators in South Asia’ to be held in New
Delhi during March 26-27.

Lauding the IMF’s activities and its assistance to the country’s economic
development, Dr Sharmin said the IMF has a scope to work for strengthening
the capacity of the Parliamentary Committee on Public Undertakings and the
Standing Committee on Public Accounts.

Highlighting the different aspects of the upcoming microeconomic policy and
capacity building seminar to be held in Delhi, Gudmundsson informed the
Speaker of the overall activities of the global lending agency.

Senior officials of the Parliament Secretariat were present.
