HC bans making film, drama on Jaha Alam

DHAKA, March 20, 2019 (BSS) – The High Court (HC) today banned making any
drama, short film or movie on the life of Jaha Alam, who languished in jail
for three years after getting wrongly convicted in 26 cases, until disposal
of a rule issued in this regard.

A High Court division bench comprising Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder
and Justice KM Hafizul Alam passed the order after holding primary hearing on
a plea submitted by Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

A High Court division bench comprising Justice FRM Nazmul Ahasan and
Justice KM Kamrul Kader on February 3 ordered to release Jaha Alam, asking to
acquit him from 26 graft cases, where he was wrongly implicated. He was
released on the next day.

“We are not in support of keeping an innocent even a minute behind bars,”
the court said in its order.

The court also asked the ACC to identify the persons behind the botched
investigation, or else, the court has to ‘intervene’ in this.

A total of 33 cases were filed against one Abu Salek for misappropriating
around Taka 18.5 crore of Sonali Bank. The ACC filed chargesheet in 26 of
those cases, identifying Jaha Alam as Abu Salek.

Alam at that time went to the ACC office and pleaded not guilty, saying he
is not Abu Salek. His plea, however, went unheard and he was arrested in the
cases on February 6, 2016, and was being rotting in jail since then.

Recently a national daily make a report on the sufferings of Jaha Alam and
Supreme Court lawyer Amit Das Gupta drew court’s attention to that.
