Incident of Baghaichhari preplanned: CEC

CHATTOGRAM, Mar 19, 2019 (BSS) – Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda said the tragic incident at Baghaichhari under Rangamati district was a preplanned one that left six election personnel shot dead.

He made the remarks while exchanging views with journalists at Chattogram circuit house this afternoon.

Huda said, “There was enough security measures, but the miscreants suddenly attacked the election officials and law enforcers from behind when they were returning upazila headquarters after performing their electoral duties.”

Police and other law enforcing agencies have been asked to take immediate steps to curb the militancy in these areas.

Earlier, the CEC visited the Combined Military Hospital in the port city to see the injured election officials those are under treatment there.

Divisional Commissioner of Chattogram Abdul Mannan, Deputy Inspector General of Police Khandoker Golam Faruk, deputy Commissioner of Chattogram Mohammad Ilias Hossain, high officials of election commission and district administration accompanied the CEC when he went to Chatagram CMH.

Two election officials and four Ansar and VDP members were shot dead and at least 26 others injured in a gun attack yesterday evening.
