Atique proposes new tag “Love Dhaka” to make resilient city

DHAKA, March 14, 2019 (BSS) – Newly elected Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Md Atiqul Islam today proposed a new tagline for the capital styled “Love Dhaka” for creating mass awareness to make the country’s largest city a resilient one.

“We don’t need to take example from other cities, let us make Dhaka an example to others,” he said while speaking an international workshop at a city hotel herey. The workshop on ‘Towards Resilient Dhaka City’ was organized by DNCC, SEEDS Asia and the World Bank.

It was arranged aimed at sharing experiences from two projects – “Urban Resilience Project (URP)-DNCC Part” supported by World Bank, and “Capacity building for Community Based Disaster Risk Reduction in Urban Area of Bangladesh” implemented by DNCC and SEEDS Asia supported by JICA as well as to discuss the way forward to make Dhaka a resilient city.

During the workshop, the mayor also unveiled a newly published booklet, “Nagar Pratyasha,” that is a compilation of extensive research based DRR (Disaster Risk Reduction) knowledge by experts and community members in North Dhaka city.

DNCC Chief Executive Office Abdul Hai, Chief Engineer Brig Gen Md Jubayer Salehin, JICA country programme coordinator Naoki Matsumura, Senior Representative Yasuhiro Kawazoe, Executive Director of SEEDS Asia Yuko Nakagawa spoke community preparedness at the workshop.

Project director of URP-DNCC Dr Tariq bin Yousuf, SEEDS Asia consultant Suvendrini Kakuchi and project coordinator Miharu Sato gave separate presentations.

Yuko emphasized that disaster in Japan has shown that community preparedness is the most important in saving lives. “Role of community based DRR is the key to preventing and protecting people from urban disasters,” she added.

Numbers of councilors of different wards of DNCC took part at the open discussion and gave their overview about role of communities in taking preparedness towards disasters like fire, earthquake and water logging.
