3 get life in prison in Rajshahi’s BCL leader Rabiul murder case

RAJSHAHI, March 13, 2019 (BSS)- A trial tribunal here today convicted three persons and sentenced them to life in prison on charge of killing a Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leader Rabiul Islam in Rajshahi city around six years back.

The court found them guilty of murdering Rabiul Islam, the then vice-president of Rajshahi University School and College unit of BCL, and handed the verdict this noon.

The convicts identified as Setu Islam, 30, son of Hassan Howker, Md Babla, 27, son of Babu Koshai, and Md Sohag, 26, son of Bablu driver, were also fined Taka 10,000 each, in default, to suffer six months more behind the bar.

Seven other accused of the case were acquitted as the charge brought against them could not be proved beyond doubt.

Rajshahi Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal Judge Anup Kumar Roy pronounced the verdict in presence of all the accused excepting Setu Islam who remains absconding for long.

According to the prosecution story, in brief, is that the accused stabbed Rabiul Islam at Rajshahi University’s Fine Arts ground indiscriminately as sequel to previous enmity on April 14, 2013.

He was immediately transported to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries within a few seconds of reaching there.

Shafiqul Islam, elder brother of the victim, had lodged a case with Boalia Police Station on the following day. Upon completion investigation, police pressed charges accusing ten persons on May 10, 2014.

After examining recorded deposition of 19 prosecution witnesses and other relevant evidences the tribunal handed down the verdict.

Special Public Prosecutor Entajul Haque Babu conducted the case on behalf of the state while Advocates Abu Bakkar and Roisul Islam defended the accused.
