Int’l Women’s Day observed in Rajshahi

RAJSHAHI, March 9, 2019 (BSS) – Various government and non-government
development organisations observed the International Women’s Day-2019
befittingly with a vow to free the womenfolk from all sorts of violence,
disparity and discrimination.

Marking the day, district administration and department of women affairs
organised a two-day women development fair at the premises of District Women
Affairs office in the city on Friday.

Chaired by Deputy Director of Department of Women Affairs Shirin Shobnom,
the fair opening ceremony was addressed, among others, by city unit vice-
president of Bangladesh Awami League Shaheen Akhter Rainy, former State
Minister Prof Zinatunnessa Talukder and Deputy Commissioner SM Abdul Kader.

A huge procession was brought out from Alupatti crossing which paraded the
main thoroughfares of the city carrying banners and festoons. The procession
converged into an hour-long human chain and street-corner meeting at Shaheb
Bazar crossing.

Various development organisations including Bangladesh Mohila Parishad,
Association for Community Development (ACD) and Ladies Organisation for
Social Welfare joined the programmes.

Taking part in the discussion, the development activists unanimously said
gender balance is the precondition to substantial and sustainable progress of
the nation and it is very important to the development of national economy.

They also emphasized the need for freeing society from gender
discrimination to establish a non discriminatory and equitable society for
taking the nation forward successfully.

Highlighting their laudable contribution to the nation-building process,
they called for acknowledging the domestic and farm women workers as
labourers so that they could ensure their legitimate rights.
