BNP-Jamaat confined women to house: Railway Minister

RANGPUR, Mar 08, 2019 (BSS) – Railway Minister Advocate Nurul Islam
Sujan, today said the BNP-Jamaat alliance had confined women to house in the
name of religion.

“Gender discrimination in the society increases due to malpractice of
religious discipline, social status, illiteracy, curses and superstitions.
Women should become well-educated to contribute to the society and take
responsibility for establishing their rights,” he said.

The Minister was addressing a discussion jointly organised by the
district administration and Department of Women Affairs at Government
Auditorium in Panchagarh district town in observance of the International
Women’s Day-2019 as the chief guest.

He said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been implementing a number of
effective programmes for empowerment of women in an unfavourable environment.

“The Premier has arranged reserved seats for women beginning from the
local government bodies to the Jatiya Sangshad. The women are equally
contributing like men to the nation through serving in police,
administration, BGB, Army and Navy,” he said.

“Under the able and visionary leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh
Hasina, the present government is working relentlessly in establishing a
peaceful and developed society free from hunger, poverty and discrimination,”
the Minister said.

Earlier, the Minister inaugurated a Women Development Fair-2019 by
releasing balloons and visited different stalls set up there by 10
organisations with their produced items and products.

Presided over by Deputy Commissioner of Panchagarh Sabina Yasmin,
District Council Chairman Anwar Sadat Samrat, its Women Affairs’ Secretary
Hossain Ara Begum, Superintendent of Police Giasuddin Ahmad, Principal of
Panchagarh Government Women’s College Professor Kanai Lal Kundu, Senior Vice-
president of district Awami League Abbas Ali, district unit Chairman of
Jatiya Mohila Sangstha Rezia Islam and Civil Surgeon Dr. Nizam Uddin
addressed as special guests.

District Women Affairs’ Officer Rukhsana Mamtaz delivered welcome speech
in the discussion moderated by District Council Member Akterun Nahar Saki.

Meanwhile, a colourful bicycle rally with participation of over 100
female students of Dewanhat Bilateral High School of Panchagarh Sadar upazila
was brought out on streets of the district town in observance of the day.
