Gono Forum expels Sultan Muhammad Mansur

DHAKA, Mar 07, 2019 (BSS)- Gono Forum lawmaker Sultan Muhammad Monsur Ahmed would not lose his Jatiya Sangsad (JS) membership in the wake of his expulsion from the party for taking oath as a member of the 11th Parliament.

Attorney General Mahbubey Alam today said the parliamentary membership of Sultan Mansur will not cease to exist as he neither resigned from the party nor voted against the party.

As per the Article 70 of the Constitution, membership of a lawmaker will be vacated if he or she resigns from the party or votes in parliament against the party, he said.

Article 70 says, “A person elected as a member of Parliament at an election at which he was nominated as a candidate by a political party shall vacate his seat if he -(a) resigns from that party; or (b) votes in Parliament against that party; but shall not thereby be disqualified for subsequent election as a member of Parliament”.

Gono Forum today expelled Sultan Muhammad Monsur Ahmed from the party and suspended his membership of Jatiya Oikyafront Steering Committee, said a press release signed by the party’s General Secretary Mosfata Mohsin Montu.

Earlier, in the morning, Sultan Mansur took oath as a member of the parliament.

Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury administered his oath at Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.

Sultan Monsur, former vice-president of Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU), was elected MP from Moulvibazar-2 constituency.
