Protecting consumers’ right stressed

RAJSHAHI, Feb 26, 2018 (BSS) – Proper enforcement of the Consumers’ Rights Protection (CRP) Law can play a vital role in defending the consumers’ rights along with ensuring supply of safe food to people which can facilitate to build a healthy nation.

The issue of the consumers’ rights is well accepted all over the world and in the free market economy. So, there is an urgent need to bring all the businessmen and others concerned under the awareness programme in this regard.

The observation came at a consultation meeting with district and upazila level consumers and civil society members.

Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB), UKaid and British Council jointly organized the meeting at the conference hall of Department of Livestock Services on Sunday afternoon. An Issue-based Project on Food Safety Governance in Poultry Sector supported the meeting.

Retired Additional Secretary to the Ministry of Commerce Shawkat Ali Wareshi, local unit CAB President Kazi Giash and its General Secretary Golam Mostofa addressed the meeting as focal persons.

College teachers Ashraf Ali Dewan and Aslam Ali, Valiant Freedom Fighter SM Kamrruzzaman, farmer Fazlur Rahman, CAB Project Coordinator Mostofa Kamal, Project Field Coordinator Amor D Costa and Field Officer Mohidul Hassan also spoke.

The speakers said consumer protection, in the broader sense, refers to the laws and regulations that ensure fair interaction between service providers and consumers.

Shawkat Ali mentioned that the consumers’ rights in the developed nations lay focus on the right to information, choice, redress and representation, but we are deprived of such privileges.

Unsafe food has been adjudged as a major threat to public health in Bangladesh, so emphasis should be given to adopt effective measures in this regard, he added.
