Hanif denounces comparison between Khaleda, Quader’s treatments

DHAKA, Mar 6, 2019 (BSS) – Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif today called ‘unfortunate’ the comparison between the treatments of his party’s General Secretary Obaidul Quader in Singapore with that of jailed BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia.

“Obaidul Quader is a freedom fighter. Comparing him with Khaleda Zia is pitiful and shameful. It will not be right to compare a freedom fighter with a convicted person (Khaleda),” he said at a press conference at AL President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s political office in the city’s Dhanmondi area.

AL Joint General Secretary Jahangir Kabir Nanok, Organizing Secretary Ahmed Hossain, Office Secretary Dr Abdus Sobhan Golap, Information and Research Secretary Advocate Afzal Hossain and Relief and Social Welfare Secretary Sujit Roy Nandi were present at the press conference, among others. Hanif said Quader was first provided treatment in the country. But when his condition became critical, he was taken abroad, he added.

As a convict, the jail authorities will take necessary measures for giving treatment to Khaleda Zia as per the jail code, the AL leader said, adding that the government or Awami League has nothing to do in this regard.

About BNP’s different demonstrations demanding release of its convicted chairperson Khaleda Zia, Hanif said BNP leaders know that there is way of getting Khaleda released from jail without the mercy of the President or following the legal procedures. But they observe such programmes only to appear in media, he added.

The health condition of ailing Awami League (AL) General Secretary and road transport and bridges minister Obaidul Quader, who is being treated at the Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore, is improving gradually, Hanif said.

He hoped that Quader would return home in a week or two after being cured.
