Taka 161cr VAT and income tax exemption for Ashrayan Project

DHAKA, March 6, 2019 (BSS) – The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has given
Taka 161 crore VAT and income tax exemption for the procured products and
commodities under the Ashrayan-3 Project.

Sources at the NBR said that the exemption on VAT and income tax has been
given on the procured products and items under this project considering
public interest. A circular to this end will be issued shortly.

The Ashrayan-3 project has started from December 2017 under the
supervision of Bangladesh Navy with an estimated cost of Taka 2,312 crore to
ensure accommodation for some 1,03,200 forcibly displaced Rohingyas at
Bhashanchar. The project will end in 2019.

Under the project, work for construction of dams, barrack house, Ashrayan
station and other infrastructural works are going on to ensure their
accommodation. Once the Rohingyas are repatriated to Myanmar, landless and
hapless people will be rehabilitated there permanently.

Earlier, VAT and income tax exemption was also provided on the procured
products under the Ashrayan-1 and Ashrayan-2 projects, which aimed to ensure
accommodation to the homeless families as part of the special initiative of
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Under these two projects, some 2.83 lakh homeless families were
rehabilitated where each family has been provided with one house side by side
some 21,745 families were given loans of Taka 32.52 crore.
