IGAs for development of transgender population underscored

RANGPUR, Mar 05, 2019 (BSS) – Providing vocational training along with
creating facilities of income generation activities (IGAs) for transgender
population has become imperative for their development and mainstreaming in
the society.

Officials and social workers made these observations at a function
organised by voluntary organisation ‘Swapna Puron’ at Police Community Hall
yesterday for distribution of sewing machines among 20 members of transgender
population.

Superintendent of Police Mizanur Rahman attended the function and
distributed sewing machines as the chief guest with Chief Patron of ‘Swapna
Puron’ and Publisher of the uttarbagla.com Murad Mahmud in the chair.

Additional Superintendents of Police Abu Maruf Hossain and Saifur Rahman
Saif (A Circle), Deputy Director of the Department of Social Services Abdul
Matin and Rangpur Chamber President Mostafa Sohrab Chowdhury Titu addressed
as special guests.

Taking part in the discussion, a number of transgender community members
narrated their sorrows, sufferings and untold miseries and sought more
humanly attitude and necessary cooperation from all authorities concerned for
their welfare.

Failing to control emotion and tears, they narrated their unbearable life
of disgrace after being driven away from families since childhood for
transgender identity to pass floating life bearing unending social hatred and
shame.

The speakers said transgender people are leading uncertain floating and
cursed life amid untold social neglect and deprivation though they have full
rights to dream for brighter future as human being in the society.

They lauded the government for rehabilitating and providing training and
assistance to transgender people for IGAs to establish their human rights and
social dignity by making them economically self- reliant.

The chief guest stressed on a changed social mindset toward transgender
people and urged all to come forward in mainstreaming them through creating
opportunities for job and IGAs and showing cooperative and friendly attitude.

“Sustainable development cannot be achieved without proper
rehabilitation, job opportunities and equal rights of transgender people, who
are integral parts of the society,” he said.
