Fifth-time lucky as Pella claims maiden title

SAO PAULO, March 4, 2019 (BSS/AFP) – Argentina’s Guido Pella claimed his
first career title at the Brazil Open on Sunday, ending a streak of losing
all four of his previous finals.

The world number 48 defeated Chile’s Christian Garin 7-5, 6-3 to take the
clay-court title having lost previous finals in Rio in 2016, Munich in 2017,
the Umag event in 2018 and at Cordoba earlier this season on the South
American swing.

Pella, 28, didn’t lose a set all week in Sao Paulo and his greater
experience told on Sunday against his 22-year-old opponent who was appearing
in his first championship match.
