DSCC to continue drive against chemical warehouses in old Dhaka

DHAKA, March 2, 2019 (BSS)-Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) today vowed to continue its drive against chemical warehouses in old Dhaka as its Mayor Sayeed Khokan said drive will continue against chemical and illegal warehouses, not against other industries or households.

The mayor visited the Bakshibazar area after a team of mobile court was forced to leave the area after a group of local businesspeople protested crackdown on chemical warehouses and factories in old Dhaka around 12:30pm.

“Some misconceptions have been created about the drive . . . our drive is against chemical warehouses, not against any industries or households,” Khokon told reporters.

The team of mobile court restarted the drive after the Mayor assured to sit with the small traders of Bakshibazar to listen about their problems.

On February 12, the decision of the drive against chemical warehouses in the old Dhaka was taken at a stakeholders’ meeting with DSCC Mayor Sayeed Khokon in the chair after a deadly fire incident at Chakbazar that left 71 people dead and scores injured.

DSCC sources said its mobile court disconnected utility connections from 13 holdings in old Dhaka. Utility connections of holding 35, 35/1, 8, 11, 6/A, 6/B, 252, 290/2, 42/5 were disconnected as the court found plastic warehouses there, said DSCC’s public relations office Uttam Kumar Roy.

Utility connections of holding no. 17, 16/2/B, 8/3, 16/2 were also disconnected, he added.
