Home minister seeks media help to stamp out drug abuse

DHAKA, March 2, 2019 (BSS) – Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal today sought all-out cooperation from mass media to stamp out drug abuse, terrorism and militancy.

“People now want to get rid of drug abuse . . . and media should play a very significant role to combat drug abuse,” the minister said while inaugurating “The Daily Shomoyer Alo” newspaper at Bangabandhu International conference Centre (BICC) here with Amin Mohammad Group Chairman and Managing Director Alhaj MM Enamul Huq in the chair.

Noting that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina earlier declared “Zero Tolerance” policy against two things — militancy-terrorism and drug abuse, he said, adding the media people are sincerely working with the law enforcement agencies to curb militancy and terrorism.

The home minster termed the existing “Narcotics Control Act” as time-befitting and said, “We will combat drug abuse as it was possible to curb the militant forces and terrorism. Everyone is helping us and the media people should play a very responsible role in this connection.”

Asaduzzaman hoped that the media can play very significant role in different fields. Mass Media, being imbued with the patriotism, would speak about the home land, progress and heritages of the Bengali nation, he added.

State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, State Minister for Relief and Disaster Management Dr. Enamur Rahman, Sagupta Yasmin Emily, MP, former Secretary General of Jatiya Party ABM Ruhul Amin Hawlader, Prime Minister’s former Information Adviser Iqbal Siobhan Chowdhury, Shomoyer Alo Editor Rafiqul Islam Ratan and Publisher of the newspaper Gazi Ahmadullah, among others, were present on the occasion.
