RAJSHAHI, March 1, 2019 (BSS) – Proper enforcement of Consumers’ Rights
Protection (CRP) Law has become an urgent need for protecting the consumers’
rights together to make the human body free from any food poisoning and other
contamination.

The issue of the consumers’ rights is well accepted throughout the world
and in the free market economy. So, there is an urgent need of bringing all
the businessmen and others concerned under the awareness programme in this
regard.

The observation came at a daylong workshop titled “Safe Food Law- 2013,
Consumers Rights Protection Law- 2009 and Fish and Animal Feed Law- 2010”
here yesterday.

Local unit of Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) and Department of
National Consumers Rights Protection (DNCRP) jointly organised the workshop
at the conference hall of Bargachhi Union Parishad Complex under Paba Upazila
in the district.

An issue-based Project on Food Safety Governance in Poultry Sector under
UKaid and British Council supported the meeting.

Chaired by UP Chairman Sohel Rana the meeting was addressed, among others,
by District Livestock Officer Zulfikar Akhter Hossain and its Veterinary
Surgeon Dr Khandaker Sagar Ahmed, DNCRP Assistant Director Apurba Adhikary,
Field Coordinator of the project Mijanur Rahman and field officers Muhidul
Hassan and Mozammel Sheikh.

The speakers said consumer protection, in the broader sense, refers to the
laws and regulations that ensure fair interaction between service providers
and consumers.

UP Chairman Sohel Rana mentioned that the consumers’ rights in the
developed nations focus on the right to information, choice, redress and
representation, but we are deprived of such privileges.

Unsafe food has been adjudged as a major threat to public health in
Bangladesh, so emphasis should be given to adopting effective measures in
this regard, he added.

He called for raising voice against food adulteration for the greater
interests of consumers’ rights protection. If the people forge social
resistance against the food adulteration, none can dare to commit such
crimes.
