SANGSAD BHABAN, Feb 27, 2019 (BSS) – State Minister for Disaster Management
and Relief Dr Md Enamur Rahman today said the government will build 752 more
cyclone shelter centres in the country’s coastal region and disaster-prone
areas aiming to minimise the loss and casualties of natural disasters.

“After the cyclone Sidr in 2007, different ministries recommended setting up
2,097 multipurpose cyclone shelter centres in the country while the Planning
Commission in 2008 instructed the Disaster and Relief Ministry to build 1,072
cyclone shelters,” the state minister said while responding to a starred
question placed by lawmaker Md Shahe Alam (Barishal -2) in the parliament with
Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair.

In first phase, Enamur said, the Disaster and Relief Ministry constructed 100
cyclone shelter centres during March 2011 to June 2015, while the construction
works of 220 centres are expected to be completed in second phase by June this
year.

He said the government also has a plan to set up 752 more cyclone shelter
centres gradually in the country’s coastal region and disaster-prone areas.
