SANGSAD BHABAN, Feb 25, 2019 (BSS) – The government has planned to restore the
Baral River of Natore by dredging the river and recover its land from
grabbers.

“The government has a plan to dredging the Baral River and recover its land
from grabbers,” State Minister for Water Resources Zahid Faruque said today
while responding to a starred question placed by lawmaker Md Shahidul Islam
Bakul of Natore-1 in the House with Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the
chair.

To his end, the state minister said the consultant firm – the Institute of
Water Modeling (IWM) – has already completed ‘the Detailed Feasibility Study
with ESIA for Restoration of water resources around Baral River Basin’.

The IWM has already submitted the final report of the feasibility study
project, Zahid said, adding it would be possible to take steps soon as per the
recommendations of the report.

Baral River is one of the offshoots of the Ganges, which starts its journey at
Charghat Upazila of Rajshahi District. The 147-kilometre long river receives
water from the Ganges River only in the monsoon season. But, it maintains its
flow throughout the year with local runoff water and water from Chalan Beel.
