Withdrawal of corporate tax on shipbuilding industry demanded

DHAKA, Feb 19, 2019 (BSS) – Shippers’ Council of Bangladesh today demanded withdrawal of the existing 35 percent corporate tax on shipbuilding industry in the upcoming national budget for 2019-20 for expediting the growth of the industry.

The demand was made at a meeting with Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun at the Industries Ministry in the city, said a press release.

The Shipper’s Council informed that entrepreneurs are showing interest in this industry as the government has withdrawn 15 percent VAT and 5 percent advance income tax (AIT) in the current fiscal 2018-19.

The minister said the government has already listed the shipbuilding industry as a priority sector and providing all sorts of supports to develop the industry.

He advised the Shippers Council to present a realistic proposal regarding the corporate tax.

Among others, Shippers’ Council Chairman M Rezaul Karim, Vice Chairman Ariful Ahsan and Directors Arju Rahman Bhuiyan and Afsar Uddin Ahmed were present.
