Knowledge of RTI Act stressed for public representatives

RANGPUR, Feb 19, 2019 (BSS) – The grassroots level public representatives should have adequate knowledge of Right to Information (RTI) Act for smoothly running local government bodies ensuring transparency and accountability.

Information Commissioner Nepal Chandra Sarker said this today at launching ceremony of a three-day RTI Act affairs orientation workshop on ‘Effective and Accountable Local Government (EALG)’ held here as the chief guest.

The district administration is organising the orientation workshop with assistance of the EALG project of the Local Government Division at conference room of the Deputy Commissioner in the city.

A total of 214 participants including union parisahd chairman and members of all unions of Mithapukur upazila in the district are taking part in three bathes in the workshop.

Presided over by Deputy Commissioner Enamul Habib, Deputy Director (Local Government) Ruhul Amin Mian, Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Syed Enamul Kabir, Mithapukur Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mamunur Rashid and District facilitator of the EALG Project Mahbubul Alam addressed the workshop as special guests.

The officials discussed the RTI Act- 2009 and highlighted the commitment and different steps taken by the present government for its proper implementation at all levels to ensure rights of common people to information.

The elected chairmen and members of union parishads could play vital role in creating awareness on RTI Act to establish people’s rights to information ensuring transparency and accountability in running the local government bodies, they said.

The chief guest cited history of emergence of the RTI or similar Acts and said that if free flow of information was ensured, transparency and accountability would work, corruption would be reduced, and thus good governance be established at all levels.

“Enactment of RTI Act- 2009 is one of the biggest successes of the present government as the law has been ensuring the peoples’ right to know in establishing transparency and accountability at all levels,” he said.

He suggested the public representatives to have adequate knowledge on RTI Act for properly reaching services and facilities being provided by local government bodies to common people for establishing accountability and good governance.
