8 die in a fire at a slum in Ctg

CHATTOGRAM, Feb 17, 2019 (BSS)-At least eight people, including seven members of two families, were burnt to death in a fire at a slum at city’s Char Chaktai early today.

The fire broke out at Bera Market slum around 3.40 am, Agrabad Fire Service office sources said.

At least eight people including two children were burnt to death by a blaze began early Sunday near Bera Market area and gutted over 200 slums, Mohammad Ilas Hossain, Deputy Commissioner of Chattogram told journalists while visiting the place of occurrence.

He said the fire service personnel recovered the bodies of eight people from the debris.

Ilas Hossain, on behalf of district administration immediately distributed Tk 20,000 for the burial services of the each dead.

The district administration formed a four-member committee led by the additional district magistrate Masudul Kabir and Member secretary fire service official Ali Akbar to investigate the cause of the fire, he added.

The deceased were identified as Rahima Begum, 60, her two daughters Nargis Akter, 20, and Nasrin Akter, 18, and her son Zakir Babu, 9, Aysha Akter, 38, and her nephew Mohammad Shohag, 14, cousin Hasina Akter, 21 and their eight months baby.

Jashim Uddin, Deputy Assistant Director of Chattogram Fire Service said 10 fire service units arrived at the scene around 3.45 am after receiving reports of the fire.

He said around 200 shanties were gutted and the deceased were sleeping when the fire broke out.
