BCL-JCD set example of co-existence after 9 years on DU campus

DHAKA, Feb 13, 2019 (BSS) – After a lapse of nine years, Pro- Awami League students’ body Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and BNP’s student wing Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) gathered at Dhaka University’s historic Madhur canteen in a spirit of co-existence and cordiality ahead of Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) election.

A democratic atmosphere prevailed at the Madhur canteen, considered the breeding ground of politics, when the leaders of BCL, JCD, Bangladesh Chhatra Union and other left-leaning students’ organisations sat together and exchanged pleasantries with smiles on their faces.

BCL and Chhatra Union leaders welcomed the JCD leaders, who apparently remained off from political activities for long.

JCD central president Rajib Ahsan, JCD general secretary Akram Hossain, DU unit president Al Mehedi Talukder, DU unit general secretary Abul Basar Siddique were present, among others.

Welcoming JCD leaders to the Madhuer canteen, BCL central president Rezwanul Hoque Shuvon Chowdhury Shovon said, “You (JCD) are so called students but you do not have any relationship with the general students. As a political organisation, you should lead the regular students through holding council. Otherwise students will boycott you and you (JCD) will not be able to earn the acceptability on the campus.”

“JCD complained against us without coming to Madhur canteen. But today they realised that we are not their obstacles. We have to work together to hold DUCSU polls,” said Shovon.

Chhatra Union’s general secretary Liton Nandi and former DU unit general secretary Tuhin Kanti Das also exchanged views with the JCD leaders.

Meanwhile, JCD demanded fresh schedule to the DUCSU and hall union polls for ensuring congenial atmosphere on the campus for the election.

Chief Returning Officer for DUCSU poll on Monday announced schedule of DUCSU polls to be held on March 11 which drew mixed reactions.

Talking about the electoral candidates of DUCSU Rajib said, “We are talking with all voters and demanded re-scheduling of DUCSU polls and then we will select our candidates”.

Akram Hossain said, “We hope such kind of political co-existence would be cemented further centering DCUSU election and we want to revive the past glory of students’ politics at Dhaka University”.

Later, BCL general secretary (GS) Golam Rabbani had tea with JCD GS Akram Hossain on the same table.
