Tigers lose first ODI

DHAKA, Feb 13, 2019 (BSS)- Opener Martin Guptill scored a match-winning
unbeaten century as New Zealand took 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series
beating visiting Bangladesh by eight-wicket in the first ODI held on
Wednesday at McLean Park, Napier.

Guptill scored 117-run off 116 ball and shared a 103-run strong opening
stand with Henry Nicholls as New Zealand comfortably chase down the target
for the loss of two wickets in 44.3 overs.

The right handed batsman Guptill, who completed his fifteen ODI century,
hammered eight boundaries and four over boundaries while Nicholls supported
with a well composed of 53-run off 80 balls hitting five boundaries to take
New Zealand closer to the victory.

Mehedy Hasan finally broke the stubborn partnership picking up the wicket
of Nicholls but Guptill continued his fine innings as he finished the chase
along with Ross Taylor to remain unbeaten till the end of the innings. Taylor
scored 45-run off 49-ball laced with six boundaries.

Mahmudullah and Mehedy Hasan took one New Zealand’s wickets giving away 27
and 42 runs respectively.

Martin Guptill of New Zealand was named the player of the match for his
magnificent batting performance.

Earlier, Mohammad Mithun played a responsible knock of 62 runs and shared
84 runs with cameo Mohammad Saifuddin for the eighth wicket stand to steer
Bangladesh to a decent total of 232 for all in 48.5 overs, after Bangladesh
won the toss and opted to bat first.

Bangladesh plunged into a deep trouble as they slipped 94 for 6 and the
visitors Bangladesh lost top four batsmen inside the batting power play to be
reduced to 42-4.

The southpaw opener Tamim Iqbal started with a four but got a thick edge
off Trent Boult delivery in the second over of the innings as Bangladesh lost
their first wicket.

Liton Das immediately followed the footprint of Tamim after being a clean
bowled by Matt Henry’s delivery while Mushfiqur Rahim also lasted a little as
Boult uprooted the stumps making Mushfiq a clean bowled.

Soumya Sarkar looked positive with bat making some splendid shots
including a six over midwicket and survived a review but could not convert it
to a big knock as he got the bottom edge and caught and bowled by Henry after
making a quick fire 22-ball off 30 runs.

Dependable batsman Mahmudullah (13) failed to take the responsibility as
he perished to Lockie Ferguson while Sabbir Rahman (13) also could not make
his comeback to international cricket from suspension was he was stumped by
Tom Latham off Mitchell Santner delivery.

Mehedy Hasan showed his aggrieve batting but he departed from the crease
after making with 26-run off 27-ball hitting three boundaries and one over
boundary before.James Neesham took a catch of Santner to end superb effort of
Mehedy.

Saifuddin then joined with Mohammad Mithun to stop the rot. The duo batted
sensibly to make sure Bangladesh got past 200-run mark. Saifuddin composed
41-run off 58 balls hitting three boundaries before Santner. Mithun who have
completed three ODI half centuries smashed five boundaries during his
responsible knocks.

Trent Boult and Mitchell Santner were the most successful bowler as they
claimed three Bangladesh’s wickets conceding 40 and 45 runs respectively.

The second match of the series will be held on Saturday (February 16).
