3rd phase of BIWTA eviction drive continues along Buriganga

DHAKA, Feb 12, 2019 (BSS) – The Bangladesh Inland Water Transport
Authority (BIWTA) on Tuesday started the third phase of its eviction drives
at Batteryghat in the city’s Kamrangirchar demolishing illegal establishments
along the Buriganga River.

The drive started in the area around 10am and continued till 5pm, said
BIWTA sources.

A total of 30 tin-shed houses and 18 illegal establishments, including
four brick kilns, have been bulldozed since the drive began.

“The area will be marked after completion of the eviction drive. Walkway
will be made and trees will be planted all over the area, so that no one can
grab or occupy the land again,” said Mizanur Rahman, additional secretary of
BIWTA.

BIWTA officials informed BSS that earlier, in two phases, a total of 1,200
establishments were torn down on the riverbanks, including 107 houses, 121
temporary structures, 80 saw mills, eight factories and 883 tin-shed houses
and shacks.
