Overcoming challenges to gear up private sector and exports stressed

DHAKA, Feb 11, 2019 (BSS) – Speakers at a meeting have underscored the need for overcoming the challenges to scale up private sector growth and export diversification to achieve the development goals, vision-2021 and vision-2041.

They made the observation at a meeting on the 12th Private Sector Development Policy Coordination Committee (PSDPCC) on Sunday at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) in the city, said a press release here today.

Organized by Business Initiative Leading Development (BUILD) and the Prime Minister’s Office, Private Sector Industry and Investment Adviser to the Prime Minister Salman Fazlur Rahman, Principal Secretary to Prime Minister M Nojibur Rahman and BUILD CEO Ferdaus Ara Begum, among others, were present at the meeting.

Salman Fazlur Rahman said Bangladesh should overcome the challenges for private sector growth and export diversification since these two key factors are pre-requisites to become a developed country.

Highlighting the bigger picture of 2024, Nojibur Rahman emphasized the need for export diversification and asked the concerned ministry to make fully operational the Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) as it is one of the criteria to obtain the Leather Working Group (LWG) certification.

He opined that a significant amount of money spent for the project but the outcome of the project is not as per expectation.

Ferdaus Ara Begum informed that the Commerce Ministry has implemented maximum reforms through Export Policy 2018-2021 which is an action-oriented plan of the government highlighting specific sector-level interventions and immense export diversification.

The meeting was attended by eight secretaries from different ministries and private sector leaders from FBCCI, MCCI, DCCI, FICCI, SMEF along with high government officials.
