Vegetables farming brings fortune to many Khulna char people

KHULNA, Feb 11, 2019 (BSS) – Abdur Rashid Molla, a marginal farmer of
Srirampur village in Rupsha Upazila of the district became self-reliant and
changed his fortune through vegetable farming.

He sells vegetables including spinach every day and already profited Tk
1.5 lakh within three months by cultivating only spinach on his 2.5 bighas of
land, expending only Tk 6,000.

He said huge amount of vegetables could be produced every year by using
necessary seeds, quality fertilizers and pesticides.

“The char and riverside people usually cultivate cauliflower, potato,
spinach, gourd and other vegetables, onion, green chili, garlic, wheat, Boro
paddy, pulses, pumpkin, strawberry and watermelon on these lands,” Molla
said.

Like Rashid Molla, a lot of marginal and poor farmers changed their fate by
cultivating different kind of vegetables on char lands near Rupsha River.

Deputy Assistant Tree Preservation Officer of Rupsha Agriculture Extension
Department Md Momtaz Uddin told BSS today, cultivation of vegetables on char
lands is expanding every year during the dry season. At least 385 hectares of
lands have been brought under vegetables cultivation this year, he added.

While visiting five unions of Rupsha upazila, this reporter witnessed that
winter vegetables were huge cultivated this year and farmers are very happy
for getting fair prices.

Rupsha Upazila Agriculture Officer Fariduzzaman said vegetable cultivation
on char lands is increasing in all nine upazilas including Rupsha during the
last one decade.

“Farmers are producing huge vegetables due to favorable climate condition
as agriculture department provides quality seeds, fertilizers and good
advices,” he said.
