Govt mulls considering farming of Vannamei shrimp

DHAKA, Feb 7, 2019 (BSS) – State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Md
Ashraf Ali Khan Khasru today said the government may allow the cultivation of
Vannamei variety shrimp in the country after considering different aspects.

The state minister came up with the assurance at a meeting with a five-
member delegation of the ‘Winrock International’ at his office in the city as
the delegation proposed him for allowing Vannamei variety shrimp cultivation
in the country, said a press release.

The ‘Winrock International’ delegation informed Ashraf Ali about overall
situation of the shrimp cultivation in the country and requested him for
taking steps to allow Vannamei variety shrimp.

Responding to their request, the state minister expressed his keenness to
visit the country’s shrimp cultivation-prone area Khulna and assure of
allowing farming of Vannamei variety shrimp after considering overall
environmental situation of the country.

The members of the ‘Winrock International’ delegation were Chief of Party
Dr Jhon A Dorr, Deputy Chief of Party Dr Mohammad Mokarrom Hossain,
Aquaculture Production and Trade Specialist David James Currie, Senior
Advisor Samarendra Nath Choudhury and Policy Advocacy and Government
Liaison’s Senior Advisor Mesbahul Alam.

The ‘Winrock International’ is encouraging about 25,000 farmers in three
districts of Khulna for cultivating shrimp and operating shrimp importing
activities in the country.
